NFL Star Richard Sherman Pays Off A California School’s Lunch Debt

Tis the season to give in abundance!

NFL superstar Richard Sherman just paid off the lunch debt of a California middle school.

According to the Root, the San Francisco 49ers star gave $7,491.27 to Cabrillo Middle School in Santa Clara, California to cover the outstanding cafeteria bill. The announcement was made by Cabrillo’s principal Stan Garber. Garber issued a press release via the school’s website saying, “On Saturday, November 23rd, 49ers Cornerback Richard Sherman pulled me from my shift as a docent in the 49ers Museum to give me a personal check for $7,491.27 to cover Cabrillo Middle Schools’ cafeteria debt. Go 49ers, Go Richard Sherman.”

The donation, which will help about 60 families, was made through Sherman’s organization, Blanket Coverage - A Richard Sherman Family Foundation. Sherman spoke to the press about why he chose to donate. “We have found that eliminating school lunch debt is one way to help assist students and their families in relieving some of the stress that comes with attending school on a daily basis. The last thing any child should have to worry about is being able to afford eating breakfast and lunch at school; we aim to do our part in eliminating that obstacle,” he said.

The 31-year-old is no stranger to good deeds. Sherman also donated $20,000 to Tacoma Public Schools District to cover their outstanding school lunch debt. Since 2013, his organization has raised more than $1.5 million and helped more than 70,000 people, providing low income communities with school supplies and clothing.

“It’s the most generous thing to happen for these kids, there’s plenty in need and he didn’t neglect them, it was the perfect way to give back and help them,” Garber said.

Thank you Richard Sherman! Because of you, they can.
