Michelle Obama loves to drop in on students to inspire them to reach higher, even while on her "Becoming" book tour.
On Tuesday, Mrs. Obama surprised a group of Wayne State University students at the Motown Museum in Detroit, where they were gathered together to discuss education. As you can imagine, their reaction to the unexpected visit was priceless.
Invited by Obama's Reach Higher initiative, the 18 young men of color were talking about college, ambition, and drive with Obama's brother Craig Robinson and actor and Detroit Native Keegan-Michael Key. Little did they know that they would soon be getting advice from the Forever First Lady herself.

As Obama listened to the college students share their stories, she told them:
"Universities are looking for and should be looking for a diverse array of experiences. People who come from different backgrounds, because if everybody looked the same and experienced life the same way what would these conversations be like? Just a bunch of people agreeing with each other."
Obama added: "But the other thing you have to remember is that they admitted you for a reason. None of these schools want to have high attrition. I’ve worked for universities. … I’ve been a dean of students. I know that schools think long and hard before they let anybody in because they don’t want you to fail because that looks bad on them...They want you to succeed, so you’re there because they know that you can."
Thank you Mrs. Obama for always showing the next generation that they can.
