Meet The Detroit Mother-Daughter Duo Who Just Graduated From Nursing School Together

The whole family is accomplished!

Shalisa Davis is a Detroit resident who has worked as a practical nurse for the last two decades, WTOL 11 news reports. She was thinking about what’s next for her career journey and decided she wanted to do more in her field, researching nursing schools so she can further her education. That’s when she came across Hondros College of Nursing in Toledo, Ohio, not too far from her hometown of Detroit. When she enrolled in school, her daughter Mishay Davis said she would join her.

“We found Hondros, and I wanted to go. So she decided that she wanted to go as well. So, we just decided to do it together,” Shalisa recalled.

Together the two worked together to complete school, taking turns holding each other accountable and getting through the classes as a team.

“I would stay on top of her, like ‘did you study this, did you get your homework done,’ versus her yelling at me to get [my] homework done,” said her daughter Mishay.

She said she was inspired by her mother returning to school and wanted to follow in her footsteps. Recently, the mother-daughter duo graduated from nursing school together. Shalisa led the way across the stage as Mishay followed close behind.

“As a mother when you watch your children graduate from college, you feel kind of complete. You feel as a parent, even though we made mistakes, we did something right,” said Shalisa.

The moment was emotional and cause for celebration, but a week later they kept the festivities going as Shalisa celebrated her son Justin Davis’s graduation from college. Mishay and Shalisa agreed Justin’s graduation was the cherry on top because without him, they wouldn’t have made it through nursing school.

“The days where we both had to be at school or clinicals, he kept my daughter and granddaughter, so he was an intricate part in the program for us,” Shalisa explained.

Now that they’ve all celebrated their graduations, they’re looking to the future. Mishay has already passed her boards and is eventually going back to school so she can become a family practitioner. Shalisa is on the next stage of her career in the field, looking to open her own clinic one day to help underserved communities have quality access to healthcare.

Congratulations to the entire Davis family!
