A West Philadelphia-based bookstore is receiving the recognition that will last a lifetime, NewsOne reports.
Hakim’s Bookstore is Philadelphia's first and longest standing Black-owned bookstore, making it a staple in the city. Founded in 1959 by author and scholar Dawud Hakim, its aim has always been to preserve Black literature and ensure prominent Black writings are readily available for readers. Now more than 60 years later, Hakim’s Bookstore is receiving a well deserved official blue and yellow historical marker.
Hakim’s daughter Yvonne Blake told CBS, “...I always get teary-eyed because I just wish he were here to see it.” Hakim was about educating people on every part of Black history and this marker would make him so proud!"
“I know he’s not here, but he’s still leaving something with anyone that comes through that door and leaves with a book in their hand. As an African-American, this country and other places in the world have not given us our due. I think they get a sense we’re not trying to take anything from anyone, but we just want to be given a fair chance to succeed," she continued.
