Trailblazing gymnast Simone Biles was just named Female Olympic Athlete of the Year at the Team USA awards.
The awards were recorded live in Los Angeles and presented by Dow. The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee announced the winners, acknowledging outstanding achievements in 8 categories. Awards include Female Paralympic Athlete of the Year, Male Olympic Athlete of the Year, Male Paralympic Athlete of the Year, Olympic Team of the Year, Paralympic Team of the Year, Olympic Coach of the Year, Paralympic Coach of the Year, and Female Olympic Athlete of the Year.
Biles won five gold medals at the 2019 FIG World Championships, the most of any gymnast at a single event since 1958. She holds the title for most decorated female gymnast in history and most decorated gymnast in world championship history. She is also the first woman in 70 years to win six U.S. all around titles.
Award recipients were chosen by members of the Olympic and Paralympic community, who made up half of the votes, and online fans whose votes also made up 50%. Team USA took to Twitter to congratulate Simone saying, “Synonymous with making history, synonymous with AMAZING us all every time she competes. GIVE IT UP for the 2019 Female Olympic Athlete of the Year, @Simone_Biles.”
The award show will air Sunday, December 22nd at 2 p.m. ET on NBC.
