A double dose of Black girl magic!
Chicago-based sisters are making history as first-generation twin doctors in their family, AfroTech reports.
Brandi and Brittani Jackson were the only Black students in their class at Twinsburg High School in Ohio, graduating as salutatorians before pursuing their careers in medicine. Brandi attended Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine while her sister Brittani attended the University of Michigan Medical School. The two were inspired by the Black doctors they saw growing up and are now doctors at the University of Illinois.
“It’s hard to envision yourself as something you don’t see. But as I got further into medicine, I realized that maybe I could be a visual reminder to someone who looks like me that they can be anything. At least that’s my hope,” Dr. Brittani said.
Dr. Brandi works as a psychiatrist, with Dr. Brittani serving as a family medicine doctor. The sisters have launched an online platform that supports other Black doctors through various resources and opportunities to build community.
“For us, it’s not enough to say, ‘we made it.’ We want to help others do it too. It’s our way of giving back to the hundreds of people who have helped us on our journey through medicine. We want to pay it forward. We’re hoping to change the face of medicine, together.” Dr. Brandi said.
The two said they are inspired to make a difference in medicine and serve as living examples of what’s possible for people who look like them.
Congratulations ladies! Because of you, we can!
