2017, what a time to reclaim your time - and Congresswoman Maxine Waters is doing just that on the latest cover of Essence Magazine.
In it, Waters, fondly known as Auntie Maxine, discusses her career, being her authentic self, how to run for political office, and how she "wants to be remembered as a courageous fighter."
"One of the things I discovered a long time ago was that I make people uncomfortable and that my advocacy goes beyond what politicians normally do, Waters told ESSENCE. "I have a strong sense of what's fair and what’s not fair, and for vulnerable people who are being taken advantage of, or who are being bullied or intimidated, I tend to want to be protective or to fight for them," she added.
Essence's December 2017/January 2018 issue also includes actor Kofi Siriboe, U.S. Open Champion Sloane Stephens, sports commentator Jemele Hill, actor/writer extraordinaire Issa Rae and more.
The issue is set to hit newsstands on November 17.
