Netflix Launches its First Animated Series From Africa and it Features an All Female Led Cast

Netflix continues to show their commitment to diverse content and storytellers. In a press release Tuesday, the company shared their plans to develop their first African animated series — Mama Ks Team 4.

The show, which is created by Zambian writer, Malenga Mulendema, is set in the neo-futuristic city of Lusaka, Zambia. Viewers will follow four melanin rich teen girls who are recruited by a secret agent still committed to saving the world.

"In creating a superhero show set in Lusaka, I hope to introduce the world to four strong African girls who save the day in their own fun and crazy way. Most importantly, I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero," Mulendema said in the statement.

Netflix’s vice president of original animation, Melissa Cobb, cosigned the significance of the series.

"Mama K's Team 4 has the potential to give a whole new generation of African children the opportunity to see themselves on-screen in the powerful, aspirational characters they look up to,"  she said.

The series is designed by Cameroonian artist Malcolm Wope and it's produced by Cape-Town based, Triggerfish Animation Studios.
