After Maryland sisters Nikki Howard and Jaqui Wright were furloughed from their government jobs due to the government shutdown, they tapped into a gift passed down from the ancestors: making a way out of no way.
"It's either cry or get up and do something, so we decided to get up and do something,” Howard told WJLA.
That something was starting their own business called the Furlough Cheesecake. Their new entrepreneurial venture was inspired by the cheesecake that Howard made for the New Year.
"My mother said, ‘Girl, you could sell these cheesecakes,'" Wright shared. "And I was like, why don't we sell the cheesecakes?"
Howard added: "Light bulbs went off and the Furlough Sisters and the Furlough Cheesecake came about."
The two utilized social platforms to launch their business, and by doing so, have already received out of state orders.
With both of their husbands being unable to work due to disabilities, Wright shared: "I'm not saying that I’m happy that we’re not at work and getting a consistent paycheck, but it’s a great way to use the time. As far as just having something else to put my brain on, my creativity on, it feels amazing."
