When New York native Frederick Joseph created a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for children in Harlem to see "Black Panther," he had one goal in mind: to raise just enough to send 300 kids to see the highly anticipated Marvel movie.
"I want these children to be able to see that people who look like them can be superheroes, royalty, and more," Joseph wrote under the campaign's story section. "All proceeds will go to paying for the private screening tickets for children and chaperones, as well as refreshments. The release of the film is February 16th, 2018, and the screenings will take place the following week between February 19th and 22nd."
The 28-year-old marketing consultant also included a detailed breakdown of the costs: "$13.00 per child ticket, $13.00 refreshments per child, $17.00 per chaperone ticket, (and) $10.00 refreshments per chaperone."
Within six days of launching the campaign, Joseph exceeded his goal of $10,000 by an incredible amount, raising over $35,000. Initially, he planned to donate all the funds to the Harlem Children's Zone; however, although appreciative, the non-profit was unable to accept the donation.
Now, as reflected on the updated GoFundMe page, the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem, who serves over 1, 000 children, will receive the large donation.
According to ABC News, Joseph said: "The hope is that everyone will be able to go to the film and what's left over will be donated to the club."
Joseph also hopes the campaign will not only spark a national conversation about inclusion and representation, but also inspire others to "really start something in their own communities."
In fact, Joseph is challenging others to start a GoFundMe campaign in their city to raise funds for children to go see "Black Panther."
Thanks to all the amazing support, I am announcing the #BlackPantherChallenge. I'm challenging you to start a @gofundme to buy tix for kids in your city to see Black Panther! 10 campaigns that join the #BlackPantherChallenge will receive $100. read & share:https://t.co/KQ6vXdY95O
