Ava DuVernay Unveils New Theater With Launch of Fall Film Series

Award Winning Filmmaker Ava DuVernay continues to break barriers and blaze new trails in the industry. DuVernay’s film collective, ARRAY Alliance, is launching a 6 week film series to celebrate the completion of its new state of the art theater on ARRAY’s Los Angeles campus, Deadline reports.

The Amanda Theater, located on the ARRAY Alliance campus in Los Angeles’ Filipinotown, will host ARRAY 360, a film series featuring up and coming artists and award-winning filmmakers. The series will highlight the work of prominent women in film including French film director, writer and editor Agnès Varda, French West Indies director, writer and producer Euzhan Palcy, director and producer Barbara Loden, and actress and director Mati Diop.

DuVernay issued a statement about the importance of ARRAY 360 saying, “As a model, ARRAY does steep itself in inclusion models to correct long-held absences. We believe in balance from the beginning. Our ARRAY Creative Campus was built with this belonging in mind from the first day and ARRAY 360 is a reflection of our mantra that everyone has a place in true cinema.”

This theater represents another move by DuVernay to actively engage audiences and talent whom often times have been left out. Her impact is often referred to as "the Ava effect" by directors and actors that have gone on to do amazing things in the industry after being seen and employed by her.

Mercedes Cooper, Director of Programming and ARRAY 360 curator said that “In addition to paying tribute to exquisite filmmakers, some of whose work has gone underappreciated, our ARRAY 360 series strives to connect with audiences that don’t always see themselves reflected on screen. Our mission is to amplify varied voices and visions, to prioritize them and to center them.”

ARRAY 360 launches September 27th and runs through November 2nd. Admission is free and open to the public with registration.
