Visionary filmmaker Ava DuVernay is working on a new project for Netflix - it's a documentary about music icon Prince Rogers Nelson.
Not only did Prince's estate handpick DuVernay to direct the documentary, "the man himself blessed the film in a sense," reports Deadline. "Before he passed away (in April of 2016), Prince reached out to the 'Queen Sugar' creator directly about working together."
As a result, DuVernay has full access to Prince's archives recordings and unreleased material.
Honored to have @ava lead the vision for Prince’s documentary and bring his story to life for @netflix.

“He shattered every preconceived notion, smashed every boundary, shared everything in his heart through his music," DuVernay told Deadline. "The only way I know how to make this film is with love. And with great care. I'm honored to do so and grateful for the opportunity entrusted to me by the estate."
It's been reported that DuVernay's Netflix documentary about Prince is currently in development. A release date has yet to be announced.
