In 2018, Stacey Abrams made history as the nation's first Black woman to win a major party's nomination for governor. Now, less than a year after her historic campaign, she's set to make history once more - this time as the first Black woman to give the Democratic response to the State of the Union, reports CNN. The practice of countering the president's speech started in 1966 and later became an annual tradition in 1982.

"Her electrifying message of courage, perseverance and hope reinvigorated our nation and our politics, and continues to inspire millions of Americans in every part of the country," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. "Stacey Abrams embodies the American Dream, and her powerful message of progress for all is deeply needed during this time for our country."
Abrams blazed a trail in 2010 as the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly, and the first African American to lead in the Georgia House of Representatives.
"I am honored to be delivering the Democratic State of the Union response," Abrams said. "I plan to deliver a vision for prosperity and equality, where everyone in our nation has a voice and where each of those voices is heard."
The State of the Union Address is set for Tuesday, February 5.
