Nikuyah Walker, the first Independent to win a seat on the Charlottesville City Council since 1948, just made history again.
On Tuesday night, the Charlottesville City Council elected Walker as its new mayor in a 4-1 vote, making her the first African American woman selected to serve in the position. She was selected along with fellow council member, Heather Hill, who was elected as vice mayor in a 3-2 vote. The historic decision comes less than six months after a violent white nationalist rally erupted in the Virginia city.

"I'm learning, this is all new, but again running a campaign was new, I have been successful," NBC 29 reports Walker saying.
Congratulations Mayor-elect Walker and cheers to even greater success and progress!
