Missy Elliott Is the First Female Hip-Hop Artist to Be Nominated For the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The two-time honorary doctorate recipient and 5x Grammy Award-winner is now the first female hip-hop artist to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Essence reports.

Missy Elliott continues to create her own path and blaze a trail for others. In 2019, she made history as the first female rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the first to receive the VMAs Vanguard Award. Most recently, she’s been named as a nominee for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, becoming the first female hip-hop artist to receive this level of recognition.

“This is an incredible honor. I’m so humbled and grateful to be counted amongst all the incredible honorees. I’ve spent my career making the kind of music I love and it means so much to know that I have touched others as well,” Elliott said in a statement. “But to hear that I am the first female hip hop artist to EVER be nominated into the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame?!? Wow!! This one hits extra different as I hope it opens doors for other female emcees to be recognized!”

According to ET Canada, Elliott has over 40 million records sold worldwide and stands as the best-selling female rapper in Nielsen Music History.

This is a supa dupa fly nomination indeed! Fans are able to cast their votes daily for five nominees until April 28th. To learn more about voting for the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, click here
