Joanne Anderson just made history as the first Black woman to be elected as mayor of a major city in England, The Hill reports.
Anderson will serve as the mayor of Liverpool, winning after the second round of voting and garnering 59.2% of the vote. Anderson is also the first woman to be elected as mayor of Liverpool, a title she said she is “proud and honored” to hold.

The new mayor will replace Joe Anderson, who stepped down as mayor after an ongoing police investigation. She is of no relation to the former mayor, but both represent Britain’s Labour party.
“Liverpool has always been a city of firsts - one that does things differently and that charters its own path. Today we made history. Today is the beginning of the fresh start we all want and need," Anderson said.
