George Mason University just appointed Gregory Washington as its new president, the first African American president in the school’s history, Fox 5 news reports.
Washington is currently serving as dean of the engineering school at the University of California-Irvine. He will replace the interim president Anne Holton, who took office last year after former president Angel Cabrera left.
George Mason is Virginia’s largest public university with more than 38,000 students. Washington will become the school’s eighth president since its inception. He issued a statement about his new appointment saying, “What attracted me to Mason was its reputation for having real impact, providing access and for its commitment to inclusive excellence. Those values are in direct alignment with how I operate as an academic leader.”
The new president is set to take office July 1st!
