The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) recently received a generous donation of wigs and scarves from the local Tau Sigma alumnae chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated.
The timely donation, as the month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, was both a general act of kindness and in honor of one of their chapter members who had passed of breast cancer.
"It just really warms our hearts for us to do this, this year. We actually have a sorority sister who died of breast cancer, and we also wanted to celebrate her as well," Mechell Pittman said.
The chapter donated more than 100 wigs and scarves that the UMMC happily accepted and remarked of how many of their patients the donation would positively affect. "I'm very, very pleased with the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho bringing in, and choosing us to bring their wigs donations to us. So that makes a difference and it'll make a big difference for our patients," shared Janice Johnson with the UMMC.
The UMMC started holding their wig collection drive in 2017 and will continue the annual event each year to bring smiles to as many of their patients as possible. "We go to the back and we try on different head-covers, wigs, caps, scarves, and the spirits are lifted. Sometimes they'll tell you that, that the spirit is lifted just from being able to come in and feel a little bit more like themselves," said Johnson.
The ladies of Tau Sigma chapter have already set their new collection goal and aspire to donate over 200 wigs in 2019.
